** Fourth Thursday in January
The Main Line Fly Tyers promote the art of Fly Tying and the sport of Fly Fishing. Our club is composed of enthusiastic Fly Fishers and Fly Tyers who are interested in furthering and sharing their knowledge of the sport. No matter what your skill level, beginner through expert, we provide top notch training. Classes run in the Fall and Winter each year at local venues and will have you ready for the Spring trout season.
Fly tying can be a life long skill enjoyed by all and our classes cover many types of fly patterns from the simplest to very complex. Not only will you learn to tie different types and categories of flys, but you will learn when to use them. When is a Catskill pattern the best? Should you use an emerger pattern instead? Streamers, nymphs, wet flys and more are taught regularly.
During class you will learn all of the techniques needed to make you a successful fly tier, allowing you to make not only attractive flys, but more importantly flys that catch fish. From the pinch wrap to selecting hackle to preparing a dubbing loop, we cover it all.
Every spring for the start of trout season, the Main Line Fly-Tyers run a full day fly fishing clinic covering everything you will need to begin fly fishing. You will learn everything from tying knots to individual casting instruction.
Classroom time covers terminology, knot tying, selecting equipment, rigging your rod, fishing strategies, reading the water, and basic entomology. After the morning class sessions you will be well on your way to becoming a knowledgeable fly fisher.
Casting outdoors in the early Spring can be quite chilly, so to keep everyone warm we provide an all you can eat barbecue lunch. Everything you can think of and more. Pssst, the homemade soup goes quickly!
Fly casting instruction is next. Where to begin; how to hold the rod; good techniques and bad techniques. How to avoid tailing loops - what is a tailing loop. We cover the basics to get you started.
No matter your skill level, the instructors provide individualized casting instruction. If you are just getting started or want to improve your double haul, help is on the way.
See classroom material put into practice. Learn how to cast wet flys, vs. dry flys, vs. nymph. Learn proper wading technique.
The Main Line Fly Tyers organize many club trips each year. Some of our favorite locations are the Brodhead Creek, Lehigh River and Upper Delaware River.

Time and again, sharing fly fishing knowledge has proven to be the best way to learn. And what better way to learn than to share what you have learned with friends. The best flys, fishing holes and techniques are frequently "local knowledge".
“Our club is made up of anglers from an incredible range of both skill level and personal background, all with the common interest of improving fishing and tying skills and knowledge, while focusing on having a great time. Learning from our expert level fishers while having the opportunity to teach those who may know less than me has been really rewarding!"
"I joined the club fifteen years ago and it has become a very important part of my life. I have learned so much about the art, the science and the sport of fly fishing. Maybe the greatest thing is that we are a bunch of like minded people, of all ages and walks of life, who share the same passion." "Without this passion most of us would not even know each other or spend time together."
“Multiple random stream-side encounters with club members convinced me I needed to find out more about the Main Line Fly Tyers. After signing up for the beginner tying class and attending a general meeting, I joined. Since then I have learned to tie my own files, become a better fly fisher and developed strong friendships.”
“Good times with good people in beautiful places! The fishing is a bonus.”
